Online Teaching Certificate

The Certificate in Online Teaching (CiOT) is a transcript aligned program which prepares a VT licensed educator to apply for the Online Teaching Specialist (OTS) endorsement with the VT Agency of Education. This program is a collaboration between the Northeast Online Teaching Institute (NEOTI) and Castleton University. The Adapted CiOT utilizes prior knowledge and online teaching experience to show mastery of the knowledge and performance standards needed for the OTS endorsement by end of May 2021. The 9-credit Graduate Certificate program sequence costs $3600.00 and is outlined below:

Experiential Portfolio to Online Teaching (3-credits): In this course, participants will use their prior knowledge and experience teaching in an emergency setting to document mastery of many of the National Online Teaching Standards. This course will begin with the Online Teaching Best Practices course (facilitated or non-facilitated) or proof of having completed it. Through the use of artifacts and reflection culminating in a portfolio the educator will be able to demonstrate their mastery of online teaching skills. Standards in which participants are able to demonstrate mastery will be reduced from the next course.

Bridge the Gap to Online Teaching (3-credits): In this second course in the series, participants will be assigned modules based on the gaps found between their portfolio and the national standards. Several modules will be required for all participants, particularly modules on special education, preparing your online course, and digital citizenship.

Applied Practicum to Online Teaching (3-credits): Educators will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the standards for online teaching while working with a collaborating teacher within their own online course(s). The collaborating teacher will be a VT licensed educator with the OTS endorsement and substantial online teaching experience. Serving as a mentor, the collaborating teacher will also address any “micro-gaps” in proficiency relating to the National Online Teaching Standards. Teachers will finalize their program portfolios and prepare to file with the VT Agency of Education for their OTS endorsement.
